About MobileCheck
MobileCheck is a free tool that shows you how your website looks and works on phones and tablets, and tells you in plain English what to fix.
Why it exists
The mobile web is where a huge share of people read, shop and look things up. Yet most sites are designed and reviewed on large desktop screens, and problems on phones often go unnoticed until a customer complains, or quietly leaves.
For a long time, Google's Mobile-Friendly Test was the simple answer to "does my site work on phones?". Google retired it in December 2023, along with its API and the Mobile Usability report in Search Console. The tools that remain are powerful but aimed at developers, and they test a single emulated device in a single browser engine. We wanted something anyone could use in a minute: paste an address, see your site on real phone sizes, and understand what is wrong. You can read more about that in our comparison with Google's old test.
How it works
We run real browser engines on our servers. iPhones and iPads use WebKit, the engine behind Safari. Android phones and tablets use Chromium, the engine behind Chrome. Each device gets its real screen size, pixel ratio, touch input, user agent, and the space taken by the browser's own bars.
Your page is loaded once per device and checked in four scenarios: normal, dark mode, large text at 150%, and with the mobile menu opened. These are the settings and actions real visitors use every day, and they are where layouts most often break.
The report shows a full-page screenshot for each device with the problem elements marked on it. Every issue comes with a short explanation: what it is, why it matters to the people visiting your site, and how to fix it. Our guides go deeper, with code examples. If you would rather explore by hand, the phone window in our free browser extension lets you tap, scroll and type on your site as on a phone.
Our principles
- No account needed. You can run a check without signing up or giving us an email address.
- Privacy by default. To enforce fair-use limits we keep a one-way hash of your IP address, rotated daily, rather than the address itself. Reports are private links that are deleted automatically after 24 hours, and you can delete yours sooner.
- Plain English. A report should be useful to a shop owner as well as a front-end developer. We explain problems in words, not just error codes.
- Honest about limits. We run real engines, but on our servers, not on physical phones. We say so, and we say what that means.
- Free for everyone. There is no paid plan and no daily limit. Ads on the site pay for the server; checks run one at a time in a line everyone shares, so when it is busy you wait a little rather than being turned away.
Who it is for
MobileCheck is for anyone responsible for a website: small business owners who want to know their site works for customers, freelancers and agencies checking a client site before launch, marketers reviewing a landing page, and front-end developers who want a quick second opinion in Safari's engine without reaching for a test phone.
What is next
For people who check sites every day, we are bringing the same test to a free browser extension that runs on your own computer: no daily limit, all 51 devices at once, and it reaches localhost, staging servers and pages behind a login. The website stays the place for checks in WebKit, Safari's engine.
Everything stays free. The check is always one click away.
